LLMs Don’t Think. They Amplify.

AI doesn’t create value on its own.

It magnifies the clarity, or confusion, already in your thinking.

This post isn’t about tools, prompts, or automation. It’s about critical thinking, judgment, and strategy. It’s about AI critical thinking and the things you need to know when your marketing budget is on the line.

They can’t.

LLMs don’t decide what matters. They don’t understand consequences or recognize tradeoffs. They certainly don’t know when an idea is fundamentally bad or worse, wrong.

What do they do exceptionally well? 

Scale expression.

They turn thoughts, clear or confused, into fluent, confident outputs at speed. Fast enough that you’ll mistake activity for progress. Confident enough that you’ll miss the warning signs until you’re drowning in mediocre content that sounds professional but converts nobody.

The gap between fluency and judgment is where both the risk and the opportunity live.

The Risk: More Noise at Scale

You already know the pattern. More content. More emails. More posts. More stuff.

And LLMs make this worse. Not because they fail, but because they succeed. They make output easy and cheap. Then you wonder why your organic reach is tanking, and your ad costs keep climbing.

I say this often: “Without a strategy, more content doesn’t create momentum. It just adds to the noise.”

You’ll hear the aphorism “Garbage in, garbage out” used to describe prompting flaws. While accurate, it doesn’t capture the real problem. Structured prompts will help, but the more important issue is undecided input.

No SMART objective. No clear definition of success. No meaningful constraints. All of these lead to vague inputs, resulting in generic outputs. The LLM wants to please you, so it’s going to confidently give you an answer. A confident response does not guarantee that what you’re getting matters.

When you feed an LLM vague instructions, generic output isn’t a model failure. It’s a mirror showing you exactly how unclear your thinking was to begin with. When you give the LLM thoughtful input grounded in strategy, you are more likely to get a response that expands your thinking.

Why LLMs Sound Smart Even When They’re Wrong

LLMs are optimized to be helpful. Sounds great, right?

Here’s what “helpful” actually looks like in practice: agreement, affirmation, elaboration. The model reinforces your assumptions rather than challenging them.

Think about your last strategy meeting. Your marketing advisor pushed back. They asked uncomfortable questions. They pointed out the blind spots you didn’t want to see.

LLMs? They remove that friction, unless you intentionally design it back in.

This sycophancy is a structural risk built into how these models work. They want to please you. They’ll confidently elaborate on flawed premises, dress up weak ideas in professional language, and make everything sound reasonable. Picture the twenty-something trying to explain how the VP should be handling a task.

Left unchecked, LLMs won’t improve your thinking. Good or bad, they’ll amplify it.

The “Bright Intern” Analogy: With One Critical Addition

I’ve hinted at this already, and I’m sure you’ve heard the comparison: AI behaves like a super-bright intern. Fast, tireless, smart, and eager to please.

True enough. And like any intern, it has no lived experience, no sense of consequence, no instinct for what not to do.

You wouldn’t let an intern publish client work unsupervised. You wouldn’t skip the review. You wouldn’t assume their first draft is production-ready just because it’s grammatically correct.

The mistake isn’t trusting the intern. The mistake is failing to provide a clearly defined role and guardrails. A reviewer who isn’t trying to be polite is essential.

You can write the world’s best prompt, but if you haven’t decided what success looks like, you’ll just get to mediocrity faster. Poor output is a critical thinking problem, not an LLM problem. 

The Opportunity: Quality Through Constraints and Checks

LLMs don’t primarily save time. They can, but this isn’t the real value. When LLMs are used with intention, they improve quality.

That statement probably surprises you. Stay with me.

The intention part matters. It means slowing down to define your objective before you write a single prompt. It means knowing what success looks like. It means understanding which strategic decisions need to be made before AI touches anything.

That front-end work—the thinking you do before the tool gets involved—is what separates output that breaks through noise from output that contributes to it.

Different Tools for Different Cognitive Jobs

Outlining, drafting, shaping, and critiquing are distinct cognitive tasks. Treating them as interchangeable is how mediocre work survives.

You wouldn’t use the same person to write your sales copy and audit it for weaknesses. Why would you use the same AI session?

When you separate these functions, when you deliberately introduce friction between creation and critique, you force the kind of back-and-forth where judgment actually gets exercised.

Intentional Friction Improves Thinking

That back-and-forth isn’t a waste. It’s where your strategic thinking either holds up or falls apart.

“Does this support the objective?”

“What assumption am I reinforcing instead of testing?”

“If this were confidently wrong, how would I know?”

These aren’t questions about writing quality. They are questions about strategic quality. And they only matter if you slow down enough to ask them.

This is where critical thinking becomes your competitive advantage. The four-phase system: clarify, analyze, evaluate, and decide, creates the context, guidance, and guardrails that prevent AI from amplifying unclear thinking. It forces you to interrogate assumptions, challenge conclusions, and separate what’s strategic from what just sounds good.

When LLMs operate within clear constraints, defined objectives, specific roles, defined target audiences, and rigorous feedback loops, they stop generating noise and start sharpening ideas.

Where LLMs Actually Belong

LLMs maximize quality after decisions have been made.

Not at the front. Not in charge. Not as a substitute for judgment.

They earn their keep when the objective is clear, the strategy is defined, and the audience for and role of the output is understood.

Think about it this way: You wouldn’t hire a writer and tell them, “Create a marketing campaign.” You’d brief them on the target audience, the objectives, the channels, and the constraints. The writing comes after the goals and strategy are clear.

LLMs are no different. They’re brilliant execution tools for people who know what they want and why they’re executing.

LLMs don’t create leverage. They amplify the leverage that already exists.

If your strategy is sound, an LLM can help you execute faster and more consistently. If your strategy is broken or missing, an LLM just helps you fail at scale.

An LLM Quality Test

When you are assessing AI output, ask these questions:

What decision is this meant to support? If you can’t answer this clearly, you’re creating content for content’s sake. That’s noise, not marketing.

What assumption did this reinforce instead of challenging? If everything you produce confirms what you already believe, you’re not thinking, you’re performing.

If this were confidently wrong, how would we know? If you can’t articulate the warning signs, you’re trusting fluency over judgment.

Would two smart humans reach the same conclusion independently? If the answer is “maybe not,” that’s your signal to pause.

I built a custom GPT to act as an editor for my writing. I have to say, more often than not, its responses piss me off. While annoying, this is a good thing. You need a resource that can challenge you with impunity. Discomfort isn’t a failure. It’s a signal you’re doing the harder, more valuable work.

Risk and Opportunity Revisited

LLMs don’t think. They don’t know when they’re wrong. They don’t care about outcomes.

Used carelessly, they scale noise. I’m sure you are seeing it. Your competitors are drowning their audiences in AI-generated slop. Generic blog posts. Soulless emails. LinkedIn word salads that sound professional but say nothing.

Used with intention, LLMs raise the ceiling on quality. Intention is a discipline. You must slow down to define clear objectives and strategies before drafting any prompt. The resulting clarity gives an LLM the context and guidance it needs to amplify your best thinking, ensuring you break through the noise instead of contributing to it.

If AI is producing more output but less clarity, the problem isn’t the model. It’s you. It’s the absence of decisions worth amplifying.
